England players will try to win the World Cup by eating beans on toast before matches.
Sophisticated food and fine wines have been banned from England's US camp in favor of wholesome…traditional fare. Among them, protein-rich British kidney beans could be the secret ingredient in the islanders' bid to win the world title again after a 60-year “drought”.
Sources within the team revealed to The Sun tabloid that many of England's top players are turning to this kind of “fuel” to supplement their protein intake at the table, a few hours before matches. The only exception would be captain Harry Kane, who prefers poached eggs on toast before the kick-off whistle.
English tea is not missing from breakfast
The Sun also reveals that the menus will cater to the tastes of each player in the 26-strong squad, having been created by a team of chefs and nutrition experts: “Their shopping list — following discussions with the stars — includes favorite British chocolate bars, Haribo sweets and a selection of English breakfast tea brands.”
Three Lions coach Thomas Tuchel is meticulous about players' body fat percentages, sleep schedules and nutrition. Culinary experts who usually work at the Staffordshire national team's headquarters have devised special menu cycles that offer a wide range of freshly cooked dishes.
“Most players love a side of beans on whole grain toast”
Former chef and nutritionist Tim De'Ath, who has worked with the Three Lions national team for 12 years until 2022, told The Sun that “food is the players' essential fuel for matches and is hugely important”.
He confirmed that on the batch “there is an incredibly high focus on a balanced diet, but delicacies and comfort food also play a vital role. In my experience with England teams, beans are a much-loved pre-match staple. Most of the players I worked with loved a side of beans on wholemeal toast, which was always served three hours before the game started.”
