The American official sent a message of support for Romania and NATO allies, stressing the need to strengthen deterrence measures in the face of challenges from Russia.

“Russia's reckless violation of Romanian airspace and disrespect for civilians are unacceptable.” The United States stands with Romania and our NATO allies against this provocative behavior. We must strengthen our deterrence capacity and make it clear that we will not give up a single square centimeter of NATO territory.”wrote Jim Risch, in a post published on the X platform.

The statement comes against the background of the international reactions generated by the incident in Galati, where a drone from the conflict zone in Ukraine crashed over a block of flats. The incident raised concerns about the security of NATO airspace.

We remind you that a drone crashed on Thursday night on a block of flats in Galati, the incident being followed by an explosion and fire at an apartment located on the 10th floor of the building. A RO-Alert message was issued for Brăila, Tulcea and Galați. Two injured people received medical attention on the spot, then they were transported to the hospital.

Later, about 70 people from that block were evacuated. The incident – the most serious incident on Romanian territory since the beginning of the war – triggered a maximum alert at the highest level, a CSAT meeting being called urgently.
