
The European Union is preparing a new, 21st package of sanctions against the aggressor country Russia against the backdrop of a Russian drone hitting a residential high-rise building in Romania on the night of May 29. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen reported this in X.
“Russia's war against Ukraine has crossed another border. A Russian drone incursion has struck a densely populated area in Romania, injuring civilians. On EU territory. As we continue to strengthen our security and deterrence, especially on our eastern border, we will continue to increase pressure on Russia. We are preparing a 21st round of sanctions,” von der Leyen wrote.
In connection with the incident, the Russian Ambassador was summoned to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Tsoiu said on TVR Info.
“This incident is of unprecedented seriousness,” the diplomat said.
The country's President Nicusor Dan said in X that he had convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense “to discuss the consequences of the most serious incident” on Romanian territory since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.
“We will take proportionate measures against the Russian Federation,” he wrote.
The country's president said that “the unprecedented nature of the event requires a firm, coordinated and adequate response” – at the national, allied and international levels.
