The Russian Embassy asks Romania not to follow the “frivolous approach” of other European states. “Not to unnecessarily expose the lives of their own citizens”

The Russian Embassy in Bucharest states, in a press release, that Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev asked the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to treat “with the utmost seriousness” Moscow's recommendation regarding the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Kiev, before large-scale Russian bombings. The embassy claims that Lipaev's meeting with the leadership of the ministry took place on his initiative, although the MAE specified, on Wednesday, that the ambassador was summoned.
“On May 27, 2026, at the request of the Russian ambassador, Vladimir Lipaev, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, during which the attention of the Romanian side was drawn to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia dated May 25 regarding the systematic strikes planned by the armed forces of the Russian Federation on the enterprises of the Ukrainian military and industrial complex, decision-making centers and command points in Kiev, in response to the strikes of the formations forces of the Kiev regime on the civilian population of Russia”, says the statement signed by the press office of the embassy.
The response of the MAE was not to the liking of the Russian embassy
Lipaev would have said, during the discussion, that there are risks for the Romanian diplomatic personnel who will remain in Kiev.
“The ambassador urged the Romanian diplomats not to follow the frivolous approach of other European capitals, not to unnecessarily expose the lives and health of their own citizens to danger, and to treat with the utmost seriousness the recommendation to evacuate their diplomatic staff from the Ukrainian capital”, states the cited source.
At the same time, the Russian diplomat asked Romania to stop the military and financial aid granted to Ukraine, which it accuses of committing acts of genocide and terrorism.
“The head of the Russian diplomatic mission expressed his regret regarding the position of the official Romanian authorities, who did not have the courage to condemn the bloody terrorist attack committed by the armed forces of Ukraine on the night of May 22 on the study body and the college dormitory of the State Pedagogical University in Luhansk (Starobelsk), as a result of which 21 students died and more than 60 were injured,” the embassy claims.
The reply received from the MFA was not to the liking of Moscow's representative in Romania. “Only the traditional set of propagandistic clichés that distort the actual unfolding of events was heard as an answer,” it says at the end of the statement.
Moscow's threats to the diplomatic corps in Kyiv
Russia announced on Monday that it would launch “systematic strikes” on Kiev that would target Ukrainian “decision-making centers and command posts”. For this reason, Moscow asked foreign citizens and diplomats to leave Kiev “as soon as possible” and warned civilians not to enter administrative and military buildings.
Following Moscow's announcement, the Romanian Foreign Ministry reacted on Wednesday, stating that it does not intend to reduce its diplomatic presence in Ukraine, stating that the Russian threat is “a serious and irresponsible escalation.”
“It is a threat that, if implemented, would represent a war crime against the Ukrainian people, with serious consequences from the perspective of international law (…) We will not be intimidated. We maintain our diplomatic presence in Ukraine and in Kiev. Ukraine has the legitimate and inalienable right to sovereignty and freedom in full security,” the MFA statement reads.
At the same time, the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, was summoned to the headquarters of the MAE, a meeting which the Russian embassy says, on Thursday, was held at the initiative of the ambassador.
“During the discussion, the Romanian side reminded him that no press release or post suspends the legal obligations of the Russian Federation, including those regarding compliance with international law,” states the MFA statement.
