On May 25, the Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarina Maternova responded on Facebook to Russia’s actual threats of new shelling of Kyiv and calls for foreigners to leave the Ukrainian capital. She said that international diplomats will not leave the city, and the EU will continue to support Ukraine.
According to Maternova, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement calling on foreigners to leave Kyiv is “a masterpiece of hypocrisy,” since it is Russia that has been attacking civilian infrastructure and the civilian population of Ukraine for years.
“The regime that has been bombing homes, museums, maternity hospitals, schools and power plants for years is now suddenly speaking the language of ‘international humanitarian law’… The same regime that carries out nightly missile and drone attacks on civilians is now warning others to stay away,” the diplomat said.
She emphasized that the Kremlin is trying to sow fear, panic and isolate Ukraine, but these attempts will not be successful.
“The EU is not going anywhere! We remain in Kyiv. We remain with Ukraine,” Maternova emphasized.
The ambassador also noted that threats to diplomats and international organizations do not indicate Russia’s strength, but “are a sign of its desperation.”
“The more aggressive and threatening the Kremlin becomes, the clearer it is that the Putin regime understands that it cannot break either the resilience of Ukraine or the support of its partners. Kyiv stands. Ukraine stands. And so do we,” she concluded.
