Cristian Mungiu, who also won a Palme d'Or in 2007, with the film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”, said that the star feature film of the 2026 edition “is a commitment against any kind of fundamentalism”.

“I think movies have become too political in the last 10 or 15 years, always confirming the 'right values'. We have to balance that with movies that allow us to express our doubts about the values of the day. That's part of democracy and freedom that we have to keep alive,” said the director in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, given during the festival.

With the triumph of 2026, he joins a select company of directors who can boast two Palme d`Or awards, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Haneke or Ken Loach.

Cristian Mungiu won the first Palme d'Or at 39 years old

The first film that brought her success on the prestigious stage of Cannes, in 2007, was “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”, a painful description of births during the period when abortion was prohibited in Romania, during the communist years.

The film can currently be seen in streaming on the HBO Max platform, alongside other popular Romanian films, some of them directed by Mungiu himself, such as “După dealsuri”, “Babardeala cu bucluc ou porno balamuc”, “RMN”, “Occident”, “Three kilometers to the end of the world”, “TATA” or “A step behind the seraphim”.
