The president of the Romanian Customs Authority, Mihai Savin, detained, along with two other people from the institution

The President of the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR), Mihai Savin, was detained, on Wednesday, along with two other people from the institution, in an action carried out by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Bucharest Court of Appeal at the Customs headquarters in Bucharest and in Galati, sources told Profit.ro. Savin and the other two people are being investigated in a criminal case, writes news.ro.
Savin, who held the position of vice-president of AVR, was appointed to the post of president at the end of January by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, with the dismissal of the former president, Bogdan Bălan.
Previously, Savin was a director at Apa Nova Bucharest/Veolia Romania, general director at the Bucharest Hospitals and Medical Services Administration (July 2019 – January 2020), general director at Compania Muncipala Managementul Transportului, Bucharest (March 2020 – July 2020), general director at Termoficare Prahova, Ploiesti (March 2022 – November 2022).
Customs has been affected in recent years by several corruption scandals.
At the end of March, the institution led by Savin and the General Anticorruption Directorate (DGA), within the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), signed a collaboration protocol in the field of corruption prevention, a document that establishes the institutional cooperation framework in order to promote integrity and strengthen the mechanisms for preventing acts of corruption.
At the beginning of April, the Government approved the reorganization of the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR).
The project reached the Government's table provided for spending cuts of 4.5 million lei annually (3.1 million lei for what is left of this year), 1.7 million lei less than an initial reorganization project, presented at the end of last year by Profit.ro, in which it was proposed to cut spending by 6.2 million lei annually, mainly by eliminating or demoting dozens of management positions.
