Syrian interim president Ahmed Al-Sharaa will participate in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, which will be held in New York in September and in which he will hold a speech, an official from the Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, Agerpres reports.

Ahmed Al-Sharaa, known under the pseudonym of war Abu Mohammad al-Golani, is the leader of the Syrian rebel coalition who removed President Bashar al-Assad from power following a lightning military offensive, after almost 14 years of civil war.

“He will be the first Syrian president who will address the United Nations from the speech of former president Nreddin al-Atassi in 1967 and the first Syrian president participating in the high-level week of the General Assembly, which will take place between 22 and 30 September,” said an official from MAE Syrian.

After the removal of Bashar al-Assad from power, the new Syrian authorities received regional and international support.

Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shaibani held a UN speech in April and raised the new Syria flag at the New York Organization headquarters.

The new head of Syrian diplomacy also made a visit to Russia, a country that has two military bases in Syria. Although Russia supported Bashar al-Assad in the war with the rebels now in power, rebels that the Russian army attacked directly in aviation bombings, the new Government of Damascus, firmly supported by the US, maintained relations with Moscow.

Despite the past, both Russian President Vladimir Putin and his new Syrian counterpart, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, chose the pragmatic path in their relationships. They had a telephone conversation in February and then agreed to continue the contacts to develop a bilateral cooperation agenda, but did not reach any agreement on the future of Russian military bases in Syria. Syrian president received the invitation to participate in October in Moscow in the Russia – Arab League in October.

The new Syrian leader also met with US President Donald Trump, during a latter tour in the Gulf countries, one week after having a meeting and with French President Emmanuel Macron to Paris, in his first journey to the West.

In view of his historian as a former jihadist in international pursuit, Ahmed al-Sharaa is still subject to UN sanctions that provide for travel prohibitions, therefore for each external travel must request a derogation from the country he visits.
