Donald Trump in China. Boeing's big deal in the background
China is expected to announce purchases related to Boeing planes, US agriculture and energy, Reuters reported on Monday.
The two countries will also discuss extending a trade war truce that allows rare earth minerals to flow from China to the United States, although it is not yet clear whether that agreement will be extended this week, Reuters reported.
Ortberg told Reuters in April that Boeing was counting on the Trump administration to help unlock a long-awaited large order from China.
China and the U.S. planemaker are in long-running talks on a deal that could include 500 737 MAX planes and dozens of wide-body planes with GE engines, according to industry sources. It would be Boeing's first major order in the country since 2017, and any order announcement would be seen as a major success for the leadership summit. It could also represent the largest single aircraft order in history.
Who will be missing?
President Cisco Chuck Robbins was invited by the White House to join a trip to China but was unable to attend because the company's financial results will be released this week, a company spokesman said.
CEO of the company NvidiaJensen Huang, will not fly to Beijing with Trump, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday. The source said Huang was not invited and the White House was focusing on agriculture and commercial aviation issues, such as orders for Boeing planes, on the current trip. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump has developed a close relationship with Huang since taking office and has agreed to export the company's H200 AI chips to China. However, as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced on April 22, they still have not been sold, citing difficulties for Chinese companies to obtain approval from the Chinese government to purchase them.
Trump's last meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was in South Korea in October, where they agreed to halt a fierce trade war that has seen the United States impose triple-digit tariffs on Chinese goods and Beijing threaten to limit the global supply of rare earth elements.
