For a long time, AC Milan seemed to be Inter's main rival for the title of champion in Italy, but now it has great emotions with the ranking in the TOP 4, implicitly with the participation in the next season of the Champions League. Last night's defeat, 2-3 with Atalanta, complicated the situation even more.
A team that has long dreamed of the title could end the season with a place in the third European competition, the Conference League. Only two points separate AC Milan, in 4th place, and Como, in 6th place, after the results recorded in stage 35.
In this round, all the other contenders for a place in the Champions League did their job: Roma won with Parma, 3-2, Como with Verona, 1-0, Juventus with Lecce, 1-0. That meant that Milan's match with Atalanta had only one acceptable result for Max Allegri's team: victory.
Milan – Atalanta 2-3: “The Devil”, close to a spectacular comeback
In this context, Atalanta needed only 7 minutes to open the scoring at San Siro. He did it through Edersonwho got possession after Raspadori's shot had been blocked. In the 29th minute, the band from Bergamo struck once more after a superb combination of De Ketelaere – Krstovic – Zappacostawith the latter on completion.
The “Devil” was planning a spectacular second-half turnaround, but just 6 minutes after the restart, Atalanta made it 3-0 through Raspadoreswho tricked him on Maignan with a shot to the short corner.
Milan pressed, but nothing worked in the first 80 minutes. When he didn't save Carnesecchi, Atalanta was helped by the bar.
The hosts finally scored in the 88th minute, through Pavlovic head after taking a free kick, again Nkunku he made 2-3 in the 90th + 4th minute, from a penalty that he also scored. Milan had a great opportunity for the 3rd goal as well, but Gabbia resumed just wide in the 7th minute of extra time.
Milan thus ends the round in 4th place, last in the Champions League, with 67 points, as many as AS Roma and only two more than Como. Atalanta, on 7th with 58 points, is too far to cause any more problems.
The “Devil” will try to maintain that position in the last two legs, where they will face Genoa away and Cagliari at home.
After the victory in the derby with Inter, 1-0 on March 8, Milan won only two matches out of the 8 played in the championship!
