Asked on Monday about a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Saudi Arabia, the Kremlin said such a meeting is necessary, but that the Russian president has no planned visits to the Middle East for the middle of May, writes Reuters and The Kyiv Independent.

Trump, who was committed to quickly negotiate the cessation of the Ukraine war shortly after taking over the mandate, said at the weekend that he and his advisers had “very good discussions” about Russia and Ukraine in recent days.

The spokesman of the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, asked by journalists about Trump's comments that he could consider a meeting with Putin during his movement from Saudi Arabia, who will take place in May, said that the Kremlin leader has no scheduled journey there, but that “such a radar” is.

“And, from many points of view, we believe it is certainly necessary,” Peskov said. “It must be prepared adequately, and this requires efforts at different levels of expertise,” including continuous contacts between Moscow and Washington, he added.

“It is necessary to continue the contacts between Moscow and Washington, who were initiated and are ongoing,” Peskov said.

“But so far there are no concrete details in this regard,” said the Kremlin spokesman.

Trump will go to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates at the end of this month to participate in a summit with the Golf leaders, the American Axios publication previously wrote.

Putin did not meet any US president in the Geneva summit of June 2021, when he saw with Trump's predecessor Joe Biden.

Putin and Trump have spoken on the phone several times this year, in the context of the efforts of the American leader to mediate the conclusion of the Ukraine war.

Despite recent disagreements, Kiev and Washington signed, on April 30, the agreement on rare minerals establishing a common investment fund in Ukraine.

The agreement was negotiated over a few months and led to a critical point in bilateral relations, after the famous quarrel at the White House between President Volodimir Zelenski and Trump, February 28.
