Violators of the Ukrainian border are still trying to cross the Tisa, but now the Dniester has become in “increased demand,” said the speaker of the State Border Service Andriy Demchenko in an interview with Ukrinform, which was published on April 29.
According to him, recently the number of people wishing to illegally cross the border along the Dniester River has increased. Often during such attempts they use not only wetsuits, but also aqua scooters: they pull a person and help him swim faster.
“That is, in fact, a person, holding on to an aqua scooter, dives under the water and thus tries to be less noticeable,” Demchenko said.
According to him, in total, since February 2022, 67 thousand people were detained at the border trying to cross it illegally. Of these, 36 thousand are on the green section of the border, 27 thousand are at control posts in the border zone and 4 thousand are at checkpoints when trying to use fake documents or falsify the conditions of their exit.
The speaker also shared a case of detaining a violator, which he especially remembers.
“The man chose the direction of the border with Moldova and found himself trapped because of wild animals. He met wolves and, to save his life, climbed a tree. Realizing the risk to his life, he began to call the hotline of the State Border Service and ask for help. He admitted that he was planning to cross the border illegally, but encountered wolves. The border guards had to go to the place, and, in fact, help him get off the tree, after which they brought him to justice for attempting to illegally cross the border,” Demchenko said.
