Pollution with tailings from non-ferrous ores in a locality in Maramureș. The dust was blown up by the strong wind

Powders of sterile dust from three ponds containing non-ferrous ore were carried by the strong wind, reaching the localities located in the vicinity of the municipality of Baia Mare, the spokesperson of the Maramureş County Committee for Emergency Situations (CJSU), Dan Bucă, said on Sunday for Agerpres.

“The wind was quite strong and in some moments it developed a speed between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour. Thus, the strong wind lifted sterile dust particles into the air from the Bozânta Mare, Romaltyn – formerly Aurul and Tăuţii de Sus ponds, which reached the neighboring localities. The phenomenon created a state of discomfort for citizens, and the atmospheric visibility was, in some moments, reduced”, declared Dan Bucă.

He specified that a mobile laboratory of the Environmental Protection Agency (APM) was moved to the field.

“The APM autolaboratory was taken to the locality of Lăpuşel (close to one of the ponds – no) to carry out measurements”, said Dan Bucă.

According to him, no health problems were reported by the population, but there were calls that alerted that the tailings dust was lifted by the wind and transported to inhabited areas.

During Sunday, the CJSU Maramureş issued a Code Yellow and Code Orange meteorological warning, which estimates wind intensifications, which can reach significant local speeds of 50-70 km/h.
