Special leave. How many days is it due and when can it be taken?

Special leave allows employees to take care of family matters without losing remuneration. However, the employer must receive appropriate documents confirming the circumstances.
Knowing the rules for granting this leave helps avoid misunderstandings at work. The details and rules when an employer is obliged to dismiss an employee from work are included in labor law.
Special leave. How many days is it due and when can it be taken?
As the “Entrepreneur's Guide” explains, an employee may receive one day of special leave in the event of a child's wedding or the death of a sister, brother, parent-in-law, grandparent or a dependent.
On the other hand you are entitled to two days off – special leave – upon your own wedding, the birth of a child or the death of your loved ones: spouse, child, parents, stepfather or stepmother.

According to the regulations, the employee should inform the employer in advance about the planned leave. This, of course, applies to events whose dates are set in the future, such as your own wedding or the wedding of other family members covered by the regulations.
What documents are needed to take special leave?
The second circumstance for granting special leave are sudden events, such as death, funeral, but also the birth of a child. In this situation – as explained in the “Entrepreneur's Guide” – information can be provided up to two days after the absence.

However, after returning to work, the employee is obliged to submit a document confirming the fact that e.g. death or birth certificate.
In the event of the death of a person dependent on the employee, the document may be, for example, confirmation of joint registration. The employee must prove the right to leave.
Not every wedding is eligible for special leave
It is worth remembering that special leave for the birth of a child is available to both mothers and fathers. In practice, it is most often used by fathers because the mother goes on maternity leave.
The type of wedding is also an important circumstance supplementing the regulations. As the “Entrepreneur's Guide” explains, special leave is only due for a civil or concordat wedding. It is not eligible for a religious wedding if a civil wedding has previously taken place.
