Iran this week laid additional sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main oil supply routes. Axios reported this on April 23, citing an American official and informed sources.
According to the publication, the mining was carried out by the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Against this background, the confrontation in the region is escalating: Iran is attacking commercial ships, while the United States is strengthening its naval blockade.
On April 23, United States President Donald Trump said on his social network Truth Social that allegedly no ship can enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz without the approval of the US Navy. He also noted that American forces would fire at and sink any ships that would lay mines in these waters.
The Axios report notes that new mining could further aggravate the crisis in the oil market. The International Energy Agency has already called the current situation the largest disruption to oil supplies in history, surpassing the scale of the oil crises of the 1970s.
The media noted that this is the second case of Iran mining the strait since the beginning of the conflict. At the same time, it is unknown whether all previously planted mines were discovered or neutralized.
