The investigation into the death of Ludmila Vartic, the wife of the Moldovan politician Dumitru Vartic, took an unexpected turn, after her family reported a series of possible irregularities in the way the case was handled. Among the most sensitive aspects raised is the appearance of a traffic fine issued in the name of the woman a few hours after the death, a document that would suggest that she would have been behind the wheel after the moment of death.

The death of Ludmila Vartic, which occurred on March 3, 2026, after the young educator allegedly threw herself from a block of flats in Chisinau, amid the abuse and violence she was subjected to by her husband, triggered a wave of reactions and suspicions in the public space.

Her husband, Dumitru Vartic, a well-known politician in the Republic of Moldova, former vice-president of the Hîncești District Council and member of the governing party, resigned immediately after the domestic violence allegations made by his wife's family appeared and was subsequently excluded from the political formation.

In this tense context, the prosecutors decided on a series of additional measures, including the exhumation of Ludmila Vartic's body and new medico-legal expertise, while the investigation is also checked for possible procedural errors.

Also, the politician Dumitru Vartic is currently a suspect in a case of domestic violence with a determination to commit suicide, accusations which, however, he continues to reject.

Exhumation of the victim was approved

In a press conference held on Thursday, April 17, the acting deputy general prosecutor, Sergiu Russu, provided new data regarding this case and confirmed that the court accepted the request for the exhumation of Ludmila Vartic, at the request of her family's lawyers, reports REL Moldova.

The procedure will be carried out with the participation of an independent expert, in a new attempt to clarify the circumstances in which the death occurred.

The exhumation comes in the context where the investigators are also waiting for the results of some additional expertise, requested by the family, including the analysis of the victim's mobile phone and a graphological expertise, considered relevant to reconstructing the last hours of her life.

At the same time, the prosecutor confirmed the existence of a situation reported by the family's lawyers: the issuance of a contravention report in the name of Ludmila Vartic a few hours after the death, at a time when, according to the investigations, she was no longer alive.

“On March 3, in the name of Ludmila Vartic, a criminal case was drawn up because she would not have respected the rules of road traffic, regarding the priority of passage, at 9:32 a.m. It was determined that the means of transport would not have been driven by Ludmila Vartic”, stated the magistrate, adding that the document is checked by the National Anticorruption Center.

Legislative measures announced on the basis of the case

As the investigation progresses, the Attorney General's Office announces that it will propose legislative changes aimed at strengthening liability in cases of domestic violence. Among them is the introduction of sanctions for not reporting such situations, including for certain professional categories.

“Measures are also being analyzed to oblige medical staff, teachers and social workers to notify the authorities in such cases”, stated Sergiu Russu, also mentioning the intention to create structures specialized in the investigation of family violence within the territorial prosecutor's offices.

The family claims irregularities and missing evidence

The lawyers of Ludmila Vartic's family claim that the investigation into the young woman's death was done superficially and accuse several irregularities, from the administration of evidence to the access to essential documents.

One of the most serious charges concerns the missing or destruction of some of the victim's personal items, including the victim's clothes, which were not registered as evidence, although they were important for the investigation.

“The victim's clothes are important, because on the clothes there can be traces of violence, biological traces (…), and the destruction of these evidences can seriously compromise the investigation”, said one of the victim's lawyers, who also complained that the family's access to certain medical documents, including the full death investigation report, had been restricted.

On the other hand, the Police rejected these accusations and claims that the investigation is being carried out “transparently and responsibly”, and the Prosecutor General assures that the authorities will analyze the “correctness of the investigation”, including possible errors or omissions.
