During the Interviurile Adevărul show, the senator explained that the aid offered to Ukraine should not be considered automatically positive: “Ukraine should not be helped unconditionally. Any state in the world should not be helped unconditionally. If there is a humanitarian catastrophe, an earthquake, a flood, then sure.” After the signing of agreements between Romania and Ukraine aimed at supporting Romanians in Ukraine, Peiu claims that he does not see “no practical positive development“.

Romanian communities affected

Peiu drew attention to the situation of the Romanian communities in Ukraine, affected by the decisions of the Kiev authorities: “During this ideal situation, the Ukrainian state decided to ban the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which had ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the Romanian communities as well, which left many Romanian communities without access to life normal religious. The Romanian Orthodox Church submitted a request according to the law to be accepted as the institution of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, to provide religious assistance to the Romanian Orthodox believers, and two years later no response was given”.

Romania must act independently

Regarding the wider foreign policy, Senator AUR emphasized that Romania must act autonomously and not rely on intermediaries in international relations: “I think that Romania, in general, should not dialogue with anyone through anyone. If he wants to dialogue, he can do it in his own name. Secondly, there is a break in relations at the level of the European Union and the dialogue will be able to be resumed either by the European Union or by NATO, because there are two institutions in which Romania is a party, two essential treaties, in which this decision was taken to freeze some relations with the Russian Federation and to sanction entities from Russia”.

The senator concluded that Romania must adopt a realistic approach in foreign policy, carefully evaluating each decision: “Realistically speaking, any bilateral discussion would have the opposite effect to the desired one, in the sense that it would also burden the situation in Hungary and we could create economic and geopolitical imbalances in the region“.
