Russia wants to impose age limits on the use of phones: “It is not normal for a child to be given a smartphone”

The Russian government is considering the possibility of introducing an age limit for the use of mobile phones by children, citing that “it is not normal for a child to be given a smartphone or tablet from the age of three so as not to disturb their parents”.

According to the Minister of Education of Russia, Sergei Kravtsov, this negatively affects the child's psychological development and can later lead to deviant behavior, writes the Moscow Times.

“Therefore, there needs to be a certain age at which a child can use a mobile phone,” said Kravtsov, emphasizing that the problem is “complex”.

The minister adds that the problem lies in the excessive involvement of children in the virtual world, which prevents the development of essential psychological functions.

The Ministry of Education continues to analyze possible restrictions for younger age groups, but, according to Kravtsov, “there is no final decision yet.”

Russia has previously banned the use of mobile phones during school hours. The corresponding law, signed by Vladimir Putin in December 2023, prohibits the use of gadgets during lessons, except in emergency situations involving a threat to life or health.

The President of the State Duma, Viaceslav Volodin, insisted that there are many parents and teachers who pleaded for this measure, which, in his opinion, will increase discipline in schools.

“It will increase the authority of teachers and improve communication in classrooms. It is important, considering that many children suffer from real addiction to mobile phones and have communication difficulties“, said Viaceslav Volodin, referring to this law
