US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has claimed that Washington can easily finance the war against Iran. They will not need to raise taxes to do so.
Bessent stated that “we have enough money to finance this war”. He added that the additional budget request requested by the Pentagon – estimated at 200 billion dollars – would be intended for future military capabilities, writes Mediafax.
“President Trump has strengthened the military, as he did in his first term, as he is doing now in his second term, and he wants to make sure that the military is well supplied in the future”Bessent said, without confirming the $200 billion figure.
That request for additional funding faces strong opposition in Congress, with Democrats and even some Republicans questioning its need after last year's big defense allocations.
The costs of US military operations in Iran are rising rapidly, possibly exceeding $18 billion, according to analysts' estimates. The conflict generates expenses of about 500 million dollars a day.
A week after the American and Israeli operations began, Pentagon officials told Congress in a confidential briefing that the war had already cost more than $11.3 billion in the first six days. However, the estimate does not include all expenses, being limited mainly to ammunition. Costs such as deploying troops, caring for the wounded or replacing lost equipment would not have been fully accounted for.
