Since the introduction of the single-group format in the Champions League, with 36 participating teams, UEFA offers an additional place for direct qualification to the top two countries with the best results in the competition. Although missing 4 of the 6 teams qualified for the “eight”, England has 100% secured its presence in the next season's Champions League to the top 5 teams ranked in the Premier League.
Based on the UEFA coefficient, the statisticians at Football Meets Data have calculated the chances of the top leagues to have an extra representative in the Champions League, and the second place can be taken by Spain, who now have an 86.35% chance of sending the 5th place of La Liga straight to the group stage.
The Premier League will again have 5 representatives in the Champions League
At this moment, the Premier League has ensured the participation of 5 English teams in the next season of the Champions League thanks to the coefficient. This despite the fact that only two representatives are currently left in the competition.
Arsenal qualified for the 'quarters' after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. Liverpool were the second Premier League team to reach the quarter-finals, following a 4-1 aggregate win over Galatasaray.
Newcastle were eliminated by Barcelona 2-8 on aggregate, Manchester City by Real Madrid 1-5 on aggregate and Chelsea by PSG 2-8 on aggregate. Sixth-placed Tottenham, who reached the Champions League after winning the Europa League, were knocked out by Atletico Madrid 5-7 on aggregate.
Spain has an 86.35% chance of securing 5 teams in next season's Champions League. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid remain in the competition at the moment.
Germany, with only Bayern Munich left in the competition, has an 8% chance and Portugal has a 5.54% chance. France has a slim chance of just 0.08%, as does Italy, which has 0.03%.
