A child from the UK was born twice: he was removed from his mother's womb at six months to correct a congenital spinal defect. And then they returned it back.
Lisa Coffey, 23, was told early in her pregnancy that her son had developed a rare anomaly that causes defects in the spine and spinal cord. Doctors decided to remove the fetus and perform an operation. And then they returned to ripen until the 38th week.
The family was immediately told that Luka, as the baby was named, was unlikely to be able to walk. He was operated on several more times to repair damage to his brain and spine. The baby was left with a scar on his back and Chiari malformation (a disease in which the cerebellum protrudes into the spinal canal). He is currently undergoing physical therapy.
According to research, about 600 children are born with this defect every year in the UK. This occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not form correctly during development. The reasons are not yet entirely clear to scientists; as a rule, surgeons eliminate these defects after birth. And during pregnancy, operations are performed in approximately one case out of 1000.
