On Thursday morning, one of the miners on hunger strike in Bucharest was urgently transported by ambulance after he fell ill. The other participants in the protest said they had a difficult night, sleeping under the open sky, hoping for a favorable response from the authorities regarding the “determined” employees, according to Gorj Online.
The protests began last week, on Wednesday, when approximately 300 employees of the Oltenia Energy Complex took to the streets in front of the company's headquarters, and at one point they blocked traffic on the street in front of the institution.
People are unhappy that around 1,500 employees, whose employment contracts are concluded for a fixed period, are at risk of losing their jobs from April.
Hunger strike at the Ministry of Energy
Dissatisfaction also reached the Ministry of Energy, where 50 miners and energy workers started a hunger strike on Wednesday, March 11, demanding solutions to maintain jobs.
The National Trade Union Confederation Cartel ALFA reported that the situation is “deeply worrying” and accused the lack of a real dialogue between the authorities, company management and employee representatives.
“The fact that workers are forced to resort to a hunger strike to be heard shows the seriousness of the social crisis in the energy sector and the lack of a real and effective dialogue between the authorities, company management and employee representatives”, it is stated in a press release from the confederation.
Staff review announced by company management
The management of the Oltenia Energy Complex announced, last week, that it will carry out a personnel analysis at the level of each subunit, in the areas where the activity is restricted.
According to the company's data, on February 25, the Oltenia Energy Complex had approximately 7,800 employees, of which 1,945 worked under individual fixed-term employment contracts.
“We request the Government of Romania, the Ministry of Energy and all the decision-makers to urgently open a real dialogue with the representatives of employees and identify concrete solutions to avoid a major social crisis. There are European funds and technical solutions for the modernization and transformation of the energy industry. What is missing is the political will to put people and communities before bureaucratic calculations and profit”. sent the National Office of CNS Cartel ALFA.
