“There is only one winner in this war.” A strong appeal from the head of the European Council

Antonio Costa spoke on Tuesday in Brussels at the annual conference of EU ambassadors. During his speech he said that the only winner of the war in Iran so far is Russia, which is benefiting from the weakening interest in its invasion of Ukraine. He drew attention to the fact that the war in the Middle East caused an increase in energy prices, thanks to which the Kremlin gained new funds to finance “its” war. Moreover, Moscow benefits from the fact that military equipment that could go to Ukraine is redirected to the Middle East.

The head of the European Council calls for a return to negotiations on Ukraine
Antonio Costa appealed to the parties to the conflict for “maximum restraint” and to return to negotiations. He pointed out that the conflict in the Middle East had come to the fore, pushing the issue of the war in Ukraine into the background.
— We must avoid further escalation. Such a path would threaten the Middle East, Europe and beyond. The consequences are serious, also in the economic sphere, as evidenced by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. There is only one winner in this war so far: Russia, Costa said.

The head of the European Council emphasized that the EU sympathizes with the Iranians and supports their right to decide about their own future. He also emphasized that in the field of international law, the EU must pursue a multidimensional foreign policy. — We all know how difficult it is to reach a consensus on a common foreign policy when we are dealing with 27 different national foreign policies and geographical perspectives. However, this multipolar world requires multilateral solutions, not spheres of influence in which power politics replaces international law, he said.
