“Our missiles cannot reach American soil.” The head of Iranian diplomacy, interview with the US press

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi defended Tehran's decision to attack neighboring Gulf states in response to the operation launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Sunday in statements made to the American NBC channel, according to AFP.

Araghchi said Iranian missiles cannot hit the United States, so Tehran's forces attack American targets in other Gulf states.

“The Americans are the ones who started this war against us, attacking us, and we are defending ourselves. So it is obvious that our missiles cannot reach American soil,” said the head of Iranian diplomacy.

“What we can do is to attack American bases and American installations around us, which are unfortunately on the soil, as you know, of neighboring countries,” Abbas Araghchi continued.

On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had apologized to neighboring countries attacked by Iran. Even so, the Gulf states continued to report attacks.

A huge fire engulfed a building in Kuwait early Sunday, and missile and drone attacks were reported across the region.

Araghchi: The Iranian people will choose their new leader

Speaking to NBC on Sunday, Iran's foreign minister also said it was “up to the people” to choose their next supreme leader, even though US President Donald Trump had said he should also have a role in choosing the new leader in Tehran.

“We do not allow anyone to interfere in our internal affairs. It is up to the Iranian people to choose their new leader,” Araghchi said.

He also said that Donald Trump “should apologize to the people of the region and the people of Iran for the destruction and crimes they have committed against us.”
