1934 – Yuri Gagarin was born

On March 9, 1934, Yuri Gagarin was born, Soviet cosmonaut who would become the first man to reach space. He was born in the town of Klushino in the former Soviet Union and attended a technical school before entering the military aviation. In 1960 he was selected in the first group of Soviet cosmonauts, in the context of the space competition between the USSR and the United States.

On April 12, 1961, Gagarin made the historic flight aboard Vostok 1, making a complete orbit around the Earth in approximately 108 minutes. The mission represented a major moment in space exploration and a strategic success for the Soviet space program. Yuri Gagarin died on March 27, 1968, in a plane crash during a training flight.

1944 – Grigore Antipa died

On March 9, 1944, Grigore Antipa, Romanian biologist and researcher, recognized for his contributions in the field of ichthyology and museum organization, died. Born in 1867, Antipa studied natural sciences in Germany and later became one of the most important figures of Romanian scientific research in the first half of the 20th century.

He was the director of the Museum of Natural History in Bucharest for over five decades, an institution that today bears his name – the Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History. Antipa modernized the museum according to Western scientific principles and contributed to the development of research on the fauna of the Danube and the Black Sea. His activity had a lasting impact on biology and museography in Romania.

1959 – The Barbie doll debuted

On March 9, 1959, the Barbie doll was first introduced at the International Toy Fair in New York. The release was made by the company Mattel, and the creator of the doll was Ruth Handler, co-founder of the company. The original model represented a young adult woman and was different from most dolls available at the time, which had the appearance of a child.

Barbie quickly became a successful product in the American market and later globally, being marketed in many variations of professions and styles. Over the decades, the doll has been adapted to reflect social change and cultural diversity, becoming one of the most recognizable brands in the toy industry.

1991 – The foundation of the single European currency was laid

On March 9, 1991, the leaders of the member states of the European Community continued the negotiations that formed the basis of the new treaty that would establish the Economic and Monetary Union, a process later completed by the Treaty of Maastricht. The document, signed in 1992, established the stages of the introduction of a single European currency and the convergence criteria for the participating states.

The single currency, the euro, was introduced in electronic form in 1999 and effectively entered circulation on 1 January 2002, being administered by the European Central Bank. The adoption of the euro was a major step in European economic integration, facilitating trade and monetary stability in the member states of the euro area.

2006 – Laura Stoica died

On March 9, 2006, Laura Stoica, a Romanian singer known for her work in pop-rock music from the 90s, died. The artist was born in 1967 and became known in the early 90s, after participating in light music festivals and releasing songs that were successful on radio and television.

Laura Stoica lost her life in a road accident on DN1, near the town of Sinești. At the time of her death, the artist was pregnant. His death had a strong impact in the Romanian public space, and his repertoire continues to be broadcast and appreciated.
