More than 100 supporters of the Politehnica Timisoara and PAOK Thessaloniki teams met on Saturday, near Lugoj, Timiș County, in memory of the 7 Greek supporters who died in January in a serious road accident. Together they brought flowers and wreaths and placed a monument in memory of the deceased, according to Opinia Timișoara and News.ro.
Two buses with Greek supporters arrived in Timiş County, on Saturday, at the scene of the accident where 7 PAOK Thessaloniki supporters died in the accident in January 2026.
They were greeted by over 50 supporters of the Politehnica Timisoara team.
In January, a minibus carrying 10 PAOK Thessaloniki supporters, who were heading to France for a football match of their favorite team, was involved in a road accident in Timiş county. The minibus had entered an overtaking, then remained on the opposite side, where it was hit by a truck.
As a result of the accident, 7 men in the minibus died, and three others were injured.
The Metropolitan of Banat, ÎPS Ioan Selejan, also participated in the commemoration of the 7 young Greeks.
According to our Orthodox tradition, 40 days after a person dies, a prayer is said for his soul. So according to our Orthodox tradition and like these 7 young people who ended their lives here, a cross was erected in their memory”, reported ÎPS Ioan, according to local media.
The Metropolis of Banat specified that members of the bereaved families also participated in Saturday's ceremony. The requiem service and the consecration of the monument were performed by His Holiness Ioan, surrounded by a council of priests and deacons.
“All the participants raised prayers for the repose of the souls of their loved ones and honored their memory through a moment of deep emotion,” the Metropolitan's statement reads.
