In his youth, he trained mixed martial arts. He even fought five professional fights – winning all of them. He joined the US Congress on behalf of the Republican Party in 2012. He became famous for wearing cowboy boots and a hat.
Mullin is an official member of the Cherokee Nation, making him the first Native American to serve in the Senate since Ben Campbell's retirement in 2005. If the Senate confirms his nomination as US Secretary of Homeland Security, he will become the first Indian to head such an institution.
