The author of the article suggested that the current situation in Iran is a blow to Russia’s reputation on the world stage, but it could also bring it “certain spoils of war.” According to the journalist, against the background of the bombing of Iran, the Kremlin may try to divert attention from the war in Ukraine, emphasizing the inability of the West, and especially the United States, to comply with international norms. Putin and Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya have already announced their violation of these rules against Tehran.
Politico believes that attacks on Iran will presumably cement Russia's tough stance on Ukraine, which Putin has “consistently presented as a defensive step against Western aggression.” At the very least, if US-brokered peace talks in Ukraine fail, Moscow will have arguments ready to justify the war it has unleashed, the publication says.
