An international team of entomologists has discovered three previously unknown species of butterflies and named one of them after the outstanding Siberian professor Felix Tarasenko. This was reported by the RIA Tomsk publication with reference to the press service of TSU.
All new species belong to the little-studied genus Metarbelidae. The birthplace of one of them is Tanzania, where a professor from Tomsk, Felix Tarasenko, who stood at the origins of domestic cybernetics and systems analysis, once successfully taught.
The idea of such a name was proposed by the professor’s nephew, biologist Roman Yakovlev, who has already discovered about five thousand species of fauna. Entomologists supported the initiative and officially assigned the Latin name Hermannstaudiella felixtarasenkoi sp. to the insect. n.

Biologists know about Metarbelidae butterflies that their caterpillars develop inside wood, gnawing deep holes. Because of this feature, they are considered serious pests for cocoa, citrus and other fruit crops.
