Israel attacked Iran on Saturday morning, in an attack that, according to sources cited by the American press, was planned for months in coordination with Washington.
Trump confirms US involvement in the attack on Iran
In fact, US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the United States had begun “major combat operations” in Iran.
“Our goal is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said in a video shared on social media.
This is Trump's second attack on Iran in less than a year. The last time the United States attacked Iranian soil was in June 2025, when President Donald Trump ordered warplanes to drop massive bombs on three nuclear sites in Iran – Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.
With that attack, Trump became the first US president to authorize an attack on Iran after nearly half a century of animosity with the Islamic Republic, notes CNN.
In retaliation, Iran fired about 12 short- and medium-range ballistic missiles at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military installation in the Middle East.
Shortly thereafter, the US president announced a ceasefire and warned Israel not to drop bombs on Iran.
What are the targets of the attack?
A US official told CNN that US strikes are currently focused on military targets, but declined to elaborate, citing an ongoing operation.
Another US official said the purpose of the strikes was to address the Iranian military threat and protect US forces. The US has implemented measures to protect US military personnel in the region ahead of action, the first official told CNN.
Where the explosions were heard
Iran's regime-affiliated Fars news agency reported that explosions were heard in the cities of Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah.
The news agency also reported that several rockets hit University Street and the Republic area in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Al Jazeera television also reported that one of the strikes took place near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
