Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique issued a stark warning to their UEFA Champions League rivals after the knockout stages were drawn. PSG won their first Champions League title last season after a 5-0 thrashing of Inter.
The Spanish technician claims that PSG are no longer the underrated team of last year and that the Parisians are now considered real favorites for the trophy.
Hellish road to the final
The draw in Nyon was not kind to the French champions. In the round of 16, PSG will face Chelsea, and in the event of qualification, they could meet the winner of the duel between Galatasaray and Liverpool.
Further on, heavy names such as Real Madrid, Manchester City or Bayern Munich appear on the horizon. However, Enrique says his team is ready for any scenario.
Lusi Enrique: “Now everyone knows we can win”
“It's different to last year when nobody thought we could win the Champions League. Today, everybody knows we can win this competition”, said Luis Enrique, according to L'Equipe.
The coach admitted that the level needs to be raised in the decisive phases, but he sees clear progress in the team's play: “For that we have to improve our performances, we are aware. But what we have seen is positive and we have to get used to different circumstances.”
The “fear factor” has changed
The Spaniard highlighted the mental strength shown by PSG this season:
“What makes me optimistic is the ability of the team to handle the problems encountered this season. We have shown many times who we are. We have played many good games. Statistically, we are even better in certain aspects. I am satisfied with the way we prepare the games and the way we are developing. The team shows that it can overcome difficult situations“, said the technician.
