A federal judge ruled on Thursday that US President Donald Trump can continue work on a ballroom planned for the White House. The cost of the project is estimated at approximately USD 400 million.

The lawsuit was filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation association, which demanded that the construction be stopped, arguing that the project had started despite the lack of appropriate consents and authorization from Congress.

Judge Richard Leon ruled that the association's arguments did not meet the requirements for a temporary injunction that would halt the project. He noted that the association may change its arguments.

President Trump commented on the judge's decision, emphasizing that it was “great news for America and a wonderful White House.” He announced that it would be “the most beautiful ballroom in the world” and that no taxpayers' money would be spent on its construction. The funds – as Trump said – come from donors.

“Construction of the ballroom, which is also expected to host future inaugurations and major state visits, is progressing faster than planned and on budget. It will long serve as a symbol of American greatness!” – he added.

Last year, the east wing of the White House, which was the historic home of the first lady and her staff, was demolished to build the ballroom. It was created in 1902 during the government of Theodore Roosevelt, and took on a new form in 1942 by the decision of Franklin Roosevelt, who wanted to obtain additional working space during the war and to hide the underground bunker built for the president and his staff.
