The new interstate standard for fresh bananas will come into force on March 1, 2026. The document was published on the website of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology and establishes uniform requirements for the quality of fruits imported into the country for sale in stores, Sever-Press reports.
According to GOST, bananas are divided into three classes. Extra-class fruits must be at least 20 centimeters long, first-class – from 19 centimeters, second – from 14 centimeters. Extra-class and first-class bunches must contain at least four bananas; for second-class, a minimum of three fruits are allowed.
When imported into Russia, products will be checked for appearance, taste, smell and degree of ripeness. The import of yellow bananas is prohibited – only green or light green fruits are allowed. They will ripen in Russian warehouses.
Rosstandart clarified that the new GOST largely reproduces the national standard that has been in force since 2000. The document is aimed at standardizing requirements in the CIS and consolidating common approaches to product quality. The standard is voluntary and becomes mandatory only when expressly specified in legislation or contractual obligations.
