American figure skating coach Benjamin Shroats, 47, was arrested in Texas and charged with sexual assault and indecent acts with a minor, according to US authorities. Shroats has previously trained current 2026 Winter Olympic competitor Amber Glenn

According to official records, Shroats was indicted on one count of sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child and was being held on $100,000 bail.

Police: “Inappropriate relationships with two of the athletes”

The investigation was opened on February 15 following an official complaint. According to NBC News, police said:

The investigation began on February 15 after a report was filed alleging that Shroats had inappropriate relationships with two of his athletes, one of which reportedly began when the athlete was a minor.

The two charges would be based on the statements of two different alleged victims.

Lawyer: “Strongly denies the allegations”

Through his lawyer, Scott Edgett, the coach conveyed a strong point of view:

“He strongly denies the allegations and is determined to defend himself through due process of law.”

The authorities have not yet provided additional details regarding the exact period of the alleged acts.

Shroats coached female Winter Olympics athlete: 'She's like a father'

Benjamin Shroats trained Amber Glenn as a child before she moved to Colorado Springs to work with her current trainer, Damon Allen.

In a 2014 interview, Glenn said of Shroats:

He's like a rink dad or a big brother to me, making sure I stay on track. Although he can be laid back, he also knows how to raise the bar when needed. I can completely rely on him to be organized and consistent.”
