Geneva talks on Iran

Trump's envoys met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi on Tuesday in Geneva. Both sides have talked about “progress,” but Axios sources say their differences remain large and U.S. officials are not optimistic about overcoming them.

Axios wrote that Trump on Wednesday convened a meeting with his top advisers on the Iran crisis. In addition to Witkoff and Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other high-ranking government officials attended the meeting.

“The Trump administration is closer to a major war in the Middle East than most Americans realize,” Axios said.

One of the portal's interlocutors said that by the end of the month, the Iranians should present to the administration a package of steps regarding issues of concern to the US, which the Americans presented to the Iranians at the talks in Geneva. They concern the Iranian nuclear program.

— The Iranian foreign minister said many positive things to Kushner and Witkoff, but the devil is in the details. The ball is in Iran's court, so let's see, emphasized the representative of the American authorities.

War is in the air

A second U.S. official expressed deep skepticism on the matter and said the talks in Geneva were “devoid of substance.”

The portal reported that, according to American officials, the arrival of the aircraft carrier USS Ford and its strike group in the eastern Mediterranean in the coming days will be a key factor in deciding the date of a possible military operation against Iran.

Rubio also plans to visit Israel later this month for talks on Iran, a U.S. official said.

Axios wrote earlier Wednesday that Trump is increasingly leaning toward a large-scale strike against Iran, while Israel, which favors that option, is preparing for a war to break out within days. In the next publication, the portal concluded that the USA and Iran were on the brink of war.
