Deputy George Simion, the leader of the AUR, welcomed Romania's presence at the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council, but criticized President Nicușor Dan for the decision to opt for an observer status, “a decision of a small man and a country without aspiration”.
Simion said that, in his opinion, Romania should become a member of the body created by American President Donald Trump.
“I welcome Romania's presence at the Peace Council. It seems to me a normal gesture. I believe that Romania must be a member of the Peace Council. The vision of the sovereignist movement and the AUR party is that we will not be able to return to normal, we cannot dare to have a normal society if we do not ally with our strategic partner. I see it as normal,” the AUR leader declared, on Tuesday evening, in a press conference at the Parliament, according to Agerpres.
He criticized the observer status that our country will have.
“I don't do post-factual history, but I consider that the role of observer that Nicușor Dan assumes, counterfactual, forgive me, is unfortunately a decision of a small man and a country without aspiration”, George Simion also stated.
What President Nicușor Dan said about the Peace Council
The head of state announced, on Sunday, that he will participate in the inaugural meeting of the council, in Washington, on February 19, “responding to the invitation of the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.”
“Romania will have observer status and I will reaffirm our firm support for international peace efforts and openness to participate in the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip,” Nicușor Dan said in the post on Sunday.
He stated that “the decision to be present at these discussions is based on the support of the diplomatic process established by the resolution adopted in November by the UN Security Council, initiated by the United States of America”.
Nicușor Dan goes to Trump's Peace Council: “Romania will have observer status”
In an intervention on Antena 3 on Monday, Romania's ambassador to the United States said that observer status “basically means participation without full membership.”
Andrei Muraru explained that Romania thus keeps its options open and that this “observer status, as a rule, involves participation in meetings, works, such as this one, but without the right to vote”. According to the book, President Trump “may invite participants in the proceedings under the terms and conditions he deems appropriate”, the ambassador also specified.
