The Ukrainian air defense destroyed two Kinjal hypersonic missiles on Wednesday, launched by the Russian forces in a broad daylight attack on the city of Lviv, located in the extreme west of Ukraine and close to the border with Poland, announced the mayor of the city, Andrii Sadov, according to the EFE news agency.
“Air defense systems destroyed them. It was a titanic job,” the mayor wrote on his Telegram account, explaining that the Russian hypersonic missile attack took place around 14:40 local time (12:40 GMT).
Sadovi stated that, according to preliminary information, the attack did not cause material damage or casualties.
Ukrainian publication Telegraph.ua previously reported that three Kinjal missiles were in fact launched, one of which flew over the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, without specifying its subsequent direction.
Kinjal hypersonic missiles are some of the most sophisticated weapons in Russia's arsenal. Ukraine has demonstrated that it is capable of intercepting Kinjal missiles with American-made Patriot anti-aircraft systems, Agerpres notes.
However, the Ukrainians do not have enough Patriot systems to cover their entire territory, so sometimes Kinjal missiles end up hitting their targets.
The penultimate missile attack on the Lviv region dates back to Saturday, February 7, when the Dobrotvir thermal power plant was targeted.
That day, the Russians' massive attack mainly targeted substations and power lines.
