Folk calendar
Zlatoustev fire
In Rus', this day got its name in honor of John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople and theologian. John is revered by the church as one of the three Ecumenical saints and teachers – along with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. He was called a brilliant preacher, and for his oratorical gift John received the nickname Chrysostom.
It was customary for the people to pray to this saint for enlightenment of the mind and comprehension of spiritual literacy, as well as for help in despair. In addition, on the day of John Chrysostom, a special spell was pronounced for toothache. It sounded like this: “Lazarus Saturday, Chrysostom Day, whoever has a toothache, so that those teeth become petrified and never hurt.”
The holiday was called the Chrysostom Fire, because on this day people paid special attention to the hearth and home. It was necessary to light the stove in a special way – so that all the logs would be fired at once. This promised peace and prosperity to the family. For the ritual, the firewood was dried in advance and the wood was plucked.
There were also meteorological signs for this day. They said that if the clouds go against the wind, it means snow; glass sweating means warmth. After snowstorms, we looked at the snowdrifts: if the tops were rounded, it promised a good harvest.
