NYT wrote about the reason for postponing peace talks in the UAE on February 1

As indicated by the media, continuation of negotiations in a bilateral format was planned for February 1.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on February 1 that the next round of trilateral negotiations would take place in Abu Dhabi on February 4–5. However, he did not specify whether the meeting would take place in a bilateral format on February 1.

As the NYT wrote, the second round of trilateral negotiations was postponed after the meetings of the special representative of the illegitimate Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kirill Dmitriev, with the American negotiating team in Miami on January 31.

They were “productive and constructive,” US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff wrote following their results.

Details of the discussions were not disclosed.

Context

The first round of negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine, the aggressor country of the Russian Federation and the United States in Abu Dhabi took place on January 23. In the evening, Zelensky reported that they were discussing the parameters for ending the war.

The media wrote that this meeting was “productive.” According to Reuters, on January 23 in Abu Dhabi the parties did not reach a compromise on the territorial issue.

On January 24, the parties continued trilateral negotiations; they lasted more than three hours. Zelensky called them “constructive.”

The President of Ukraine later said that during the negotiations in Abu Dhabi, the parties discussed a “peace plan” of 20 points, including “problematic issues,” which were initially many, but “they became fewer.”

Negotiations in the UAE took place without progress in politics, but with a shift in the military bloc, the media noted. The parties agreed to extend meetings in Abu Dhabi.

The Kremlin confirmed the participation of the Russian Federation in the second round of negotiations in the UAE on February 1. However, Vitkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will not be there, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. Trump himself voiced confidence that Kyiv and Moscow can successfully hold a meeting without the Americans.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga, the issues of territories and the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are the most sensitive during peace negotiations in Ukraine.
