Folk calendar

Fedot Vetronos

On this day, the memory of the holy martyr Theodotus, Bishop of Cyrene, who lived in the 4th century, is celebrated.

In Rus', Saint Theodotus (Fedot) was nicknamed Vetronos, since strong winds were often encountered on his holiday. People have a lot of sayings about this: “Fedot Vetronos sticks his nose in everywhere”; “Fedot is angry, but by noon he goes limp, apparently, and the sun is hot on him”; “Evdokia Fedot didn’t ask, she prepared the spring, but he either rips off the roof or destroys the woodpile, he worries about the peasants.”

There was also a belief that on this day all underground springs boil and pour out onto the ground – this becomes the cause of the last great thaw. But if, instead of the expected warming, frost suddenly struck, they said: “Fedot is not the same.”

The old people noticed: if Avdotya and Fedot were clear, then Yuri and Nikolai would also be clear. If the wind was warm that day, then the summer must have been warm. If it rained, it promised a wet summer.
