What fine will drivers who drive with an expired ITP risk in 2026

With the increase of the minimum gross salary to 4,325 lei, scheduled for July 1, the value of the fine point will automatically rise from 202.5 lei to 216.25 lei. This fact will generate the increase of sanctions for the lack of Periodic Technical Inspection (ITP).

The lack of a valid ITP is dealt with by two sanctions that apply simultaneously. The first concerns driving a vehicle without a technical inspection, and the second concerns driving a vehicle whose registration has been automatically suspended (legal effect that takes effect as soon as the ITP expires). Both acts are sanctioned with class IV fine points (between 9 and 20 points).
How much is the fine for drivers driving with expired ITP in 2026
Until June 30, 2026: fine point: 202.5 lei.
Currently, the value of the fine point is calculated at 5% of the minimum salary of 4,050 lei:
- Minimum fine (9 points): 1,822.5 lei
- Maximum fine (20 points): 4,050 lei
- Cumulative maximum total (two sanctions): 8,100 lei
From July 1, 2026: fine point: 216.25 lei.
With the increase of the minimum wage to 4,325 lei, the fine point increases automatically, and the penalty grids change:
- Minimum fine (9 points): 1,946.25 lei
- Maximum fine (20 points): 4,325 lei
- Cumulative maximum total (two sanctions): 8,650 lei.
In addition to the stinging fines, the police impounds the registration certificate and plates. The only way to move the vehicle to an ITP station will be on the platform, as the replacement proof issued does not give right of way.
How much does the ITP cost and where can you do it?
If the fines can reach up to 8,650 lei, the cost of a periodic technical check remains a fraction of this amount. Prices are freely charged by authorized stations and vary slightly depending on location and type of fuel.
Average fares in authorized stations (2026):
- Motorcycles and mopeds: 100 – 150 lei
- Gasoline / Hybrid cars: 150 – 200 lei
- Diesel cars: 200 – 250 lei
- 4×4 vehicles or utility vehicles (
The inspection can be carried out at any station accredited by the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR). It is recommended to check the current validity on the official RAR website and schedule at least 10 days before the expiration.
Documents required for presentation:
- Registration certificate (coupon) in original;
- Vehicle Identity Card (CIV) in original (or legalized copy/with bank stamp for leased vehicles);
- Valid RCA insurance;
- The identity document of the person presenting the vehicle (it does not have to be the owner).
It is important to note that the periodicity of the ITP depends on the age of the car: every 3 years for new cars, every 2 years for those between 3 and 12 years old, and every year for vehicles older than 12 years.
