“He was the brain of Ukrenergo.” The ex-head of NEC Brecht died while leading the restoration of a substation after the arrivals

“Death caught up with him where he considered it necessary to be in order to return light to people as quickly as possible. For the second day in a row, Alexey Alexandrovich personally supervised restoration work at one of the energy facilities recently attacked by the enemy,” the message said.

Brecht died while “personally supervising repair work at critical energy infrastructure facilities,” according to a statement from the supervisory board published on Ukrenergo’s Facebook page.

Brecht was a man who “could make the possible out of the impossible,” Andrey Kobolev, the former head of the board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, wrote on Facebook.

“He did a lot himself – with his own hands, right at the facilities where he spent too much time as a leader of this level. Because everyone always missed him. And even on Christmas night, he accompanied the launch of a complex energy facility, while simultaneously working on restoring the system after Russian shelling. Our facility started working, despite all the problems and difficulties,” Kobolev said.

The former head of Ukrenergo, Vladimir Kudrytsky, said on Facebook that his friend Brecht died while managing the restoration of a substation after the arrivals.

“It was Alexey Brecht who led absolutely all the processes of renewing the network after hundreds of arrivals all these years. It was he who created all the creative technical solutions that revived switches, relay rooms, transformers and even entire substations from the ashes,” noted Kudritsky. “It was under his leadership that the design of shelters for transformers and underground control points was developed. […] He was the brains of Ukrenergo.

Kudritsky added that “if the state does not celebrate the one who saved it from the collapse of the energy system,” then “it will not even be injustice,” but “disgrace.”

“You left trying to return light to the homes of Ukrainians. Honor,” wrote the former head of Ukrenergo.

As Economic Pravda writes, citing its own sources, Brecht died from electric shock at one of the Ukrenergo substations.

In 2024–2025, Brecht headed Ukrenergo as acting chairman of the board and was later responsible for the operation and restoration of the network.
