In his first meeting with the foreign ambassadors, Nicușor Dan presented them with “a brief analysis of Romania's internal situation”. He also spoke about the Bolojan Government's measures, using the term “painful”, but emphasized that they “gave the expected results”.
Nicușor Dan hosted for the first time since he became president the annual meeting of the president with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Bucharest. The head of state began his speech with an x-ray of Romania's internal situation.
“The year 2025 is the year that our country ended, as mentioned, a prolonged electoral cycle, which was not without its difficulties, in which we had to face a hybrid war,” said President Dan.
Then, he emphasized that the democracy in Romania managed to face “this test of maturity by applying the law and ensuring the functioning of democratic institutions”. Moreover, the head of state says that now, “we are at the beginning of a deep process of national reconciliation”.
He also spoke about the priorities he set for himself in this mandate – strengthening the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
“Only an independent and efficient judicial system, and together with an honest and professional administration, will be able to improve the functioning of state institutions and, above all, lead to the regaining of citizens' trust in state institutions”, stated Nicușor Dan during the meeting with the ambassadors.
He also says that a “better political environment” will provide predictability to Romania's external partners and encourage political cooperation, international trade and investment.
What does it say about the measures of the Bolojan Government
President Dan explained that after the presidential elections in May 2025, there was a need to ensure political stability and urgent financial recovery.
Regarding the measures adopted by Prime Minister Bolojan, the president said that they were “painful”, but “they had to be taken in an extremely short period of time”. “And these measures at the macroeconomic level gave the expected results. Romania managed to end the year 2025 with a consistent reduction of the deficit and with a slight economic growth.”
Strengthening national security, “a priority”
“A strong Romania is an ally, a partner and a better interlocutor for the countries you represent”, stated Nicușor Dan.
He also says that in order to strengthen national security, Romania “will strengthen its participation in NATO policies and, specifically, invest in our role on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance and on the Black Sea”.
The head of state also mentioned the fact that in 2026, the Bucharest Format Summit 9 – B9 will be organized in Bucharest.
The B9 format was launched in 2015 by the presidents of Romania and Poland, Klaus Iohannis and Andrzej Duda, in the context of the annexation of Crimea by Russia, as a platform for consultation and coordination of the positions of NATO countries on the eastern flank.
The last summit that was organized in Bucharest was that of the “Three Seas Initiative” on July 31, 2023. The format brings together 12 member states of the European Union between the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea: Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
