Doctors reminded Krasnoyarsk residents about safety rules in severe frosts

The Krasnoyarsk Regional Center for Public Health and Medical Prevention has prepared recommendations for residents of the region on safe behavior in low temperatures.
According to weather forecasters, in Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs the thermometers will drop to −40 °C. Such conditions pose a serious health threat: hypothermia and frostbite can quickly set in. Experts ask people to be extremely careful and limit their time outside as much as possible – postpone long walks, especially with small children and elderly relatives. If going outside is unavoidable, plan your route, trying to reduce the distance and be able to go into a warm room.
When choosing clothes, follow the principle of layering. Wear thermal underwear, fleece, wool. Remember that several layers of light clothing retain heat better than one thick one. Protect your limbs. Choose loose, waterproof shoes with thick soles, use warm insoles and woolen socks. If you need to choose between mittens and gloves, choose the first option.
Don't forget about your head and neck, wear hats and scarves. Avoid using balaclavas; wet breathing will quickly make them wet. Avoid the use of metal jewelry: earrings and rings in the cold increase the risk of local frostbite.
Rules of behavior on the street:
- Don't drink alcohol! It causes rapid loss of heat from the body and dulls attention. You may not notice signs of frostbite.
- Don't smoke in the cold. Smoking reduces peripheral blood circulation, making the limbs more vulnerable.
- Be active. If you are at a stop for a long time, do not stand still – shift from foot to foot, move your fingers and toes.
Take care of yourself and your loved ones. The first signs of hypothermia: chills, goose bumps, paleness, then bluish skin, drowsiness, slow speech, loss of coordination. Signs of frostbite: loss of sensation, tingling sensation, white skin.
“If you suspect frostbite or hypothermia, immediately go into any warm room and take off frozen clothes and shoes. Do not rub frostbitten areas with snow or cloth! This injures the skin. Warm up gradually by drinking warm sweet tea, taking a warm but not hot bath, or applying a warm bandage to the affected areas. If sensitivity is not restored or blisters appear, consult a doctor,” explained the Krasnoyarsk Regional Center for Public Health and Medical Prevention.
During frosty periods, it is better to refrain from long journeys by car. However, experts still recommend keeping contacts of emergency medical aid points (EMP) in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in case frost overtakes you on the road.
