The journalist and writer Cristian Tudor Popescu analyzed the American operation to capture the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and claims that, from an international perspective, it represents a serious violation of the norms that govern relations between states and creates a dangerous precedent at the global level and paves the way for a world in which the great powers can justify their aggressive actions by simply invoking their own interests.

In its analysis, CTP states that international reactions show a clear isolation of the United States' position. Five major South and Central American states have spoken out against any form of American control over Venezuela.

“It is difficult to list all the laws of international relations that have been violated in this way. 5 important states of South and Central America, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay, the European Union (less, of course, Hungary), Canada have spoken out against the US control over Venezuela. Great Britain advocates a peaceful, quick and democratic transition of power in Venezuela,” the journalist wrote on his Facebook page.

According to Cristian Tudor Popescu, all these states invoke the right of the Venezuelan people to decide their own fate, a fundamental principle of international law, which the Trump administration completely ignores.

In contrast, China and Russia have firmly sided with the Maduro regime. Moreover, Beijing has conveyed that it will not give up “a single millimeter” of its interests and investments in Venezuela, CTP recalls.

The journalist warns that the US action creates an extremely dangerous precedent. In the logic of Trump's actions, CTP says, Russia could always justify a similar operation against a leader deemed hostile to its interests.

“Russia is always capable of undertaking an 'Operation Maduro', according to the brilliant American example. For example, he can send a commando through Transnistria to kidnap, or worse, President Maia Sandu under the pretext that she is an enemy of Russia,” says CTP.

He also recalled the recent statements of the former president of Russia, Dmitri Medvedev, who already imagined kidnapping operations targeting other world leaders, operations similar to the one of the US in Venezuela, naming German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz among them.

“Meanwhile, Russia is dropping a barrage of drones and missiles on Kiev, and Medvedev is considering the Kremlin's kidnapping and trial of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz,” the journalist added.
