Nicolas Maduro has arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, according to US media. The center is known for housing other high-profile inmates, including Ghislaine Maxwell and P Diddy, the singer jailed for prostitution, CNN notes.
The Venezuelan president arrived on Sunday morning at a US military base. He was taken to the headquarters of the US Drug Enforcement Administration in New York and charged with drug and weapons trafficking before being taken to the facility in Brooklyn. He previously denied being the leader of a drug cartel.
Maduro and his wife will be brought before a judge in New York on a date yet to be determined, according to CNN.
Also this morning, the official White House Rapid Response account posted a video of what appeared to be a walk by ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to US Drug Enforcement Administration headquarters in New York.
“Walking,” Rapid Response 47 wrote above the video, which shows Maduro, dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt, walking down a hallway with a blue carpet that says “DEA NYD.” Maduro was processed and fingerprinted.
The video shows Maduro, handcuffed and walking alongside DEA agents, trying to speak English after arriving on US soil.
