New Year's Eve terror in Vienna: two teenagers lost fingers and a tourist lost an eye and suffered severe burns

New Year's Eve in Vienna turned into a nightmare because of firecrackers and fireworks. Two teenagers and a tourist were seriously injured, and emergency services were overwhelmed: paramedics responded 1,135 times, compared to 993 calls in 2024.

The first serious incident occurred at 17:45 in the Hietzing district, when a 13-year-old boy was injured by a firecracker that exploded in his hand. Two fingers were partially amputated, and the teenager was admitted to the shock room, where he received painkillers, according to heute.

22-year-old tourist seriously injured

Around 23:00, a 22-year-old tourist was hit in the face by a firecracker in the Brigittenau district. As a result of the explosion, the young man lost an eye, suffered burns and cuts on his face and hearing problems.

According to the cited publication, the Emergency Medical Service teams intervened immediately and, after providing first aid on the spot, the victim was transported to an intensive care unit for burns.

14-year-old teenager loses his hand

Shortly before midnight, the Rescue Coordination Center in Vienna was alerted to an accident in Favoriten.

A 14-year-old boy was handling a firecracker that exploded prematurely, ripping off his hand. The teenager received emergency medical treatment and was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

In Kahlenberg, a 22-year-old man reported accidentally swallowing part of a firecracker, experiencing pain and nausea but no serious injuries.
