In Krasnoyarsk, cardiac surgeons at the Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery operated on a five-month-old girl with a congenital heart defect.

According to the press service of the medical institution, the baby has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which is considered the most critical. She has been in the hospital since birth. After the operation on New Year's Eve, the girl and her mother went home to the Irkutsk region for the first time.

“The child was lucky – the left ventricle was well developed, the main problem was hypoplasia of the aorta and aortic valve. After studying all the data, we decided to reconstruct the aorta and replace the aortic valve. The operation was very large, since, among other things, the stent still had to be removed and the issue of plastic surgery of the branches of the pulmonary arteries had to be resolved. The operation itself took more than 5 hours. Now the child’s heart works like a healthy person,” said the head of the children’s department Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery Pavel Teplov.

The medical institution noted that doctors of the Krasnoyarsk Cardiocenter emphasize the performance of radical operations where possible, despite more complex surgical procedures. An individual approach is applied to each child with a similar anatomy, assessing the capabilities of his heart. The quality and length of life are significantly related to the choice of surgical treatment.

In 2025, the volume of cardiac surgical care for children amounted to almost 600 operations, of which about 280 were open surgery under artificial circulation.
