Folk calendar
Filimonov day
On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy martyrs Philemon, Apollonius, Arian and Theotichos, who lived in Egypt and suffered for the faith under Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century.
In Rus' this time was the darkest of the year. People believed that until darkness left the earth, evil spirits would rage. It was believed that on Filimonov Day, kikimoras, echidnas and bats come close to the huts, scratch at the doors, hoot and scare people. However, the good owners, whose house was always orderly and clean, were not bothered by evil spirits.
Be that as it may, the days gradually became longer and brighter. On this day they said: “Winter snatched away the night and brought in the day.”
According to Philemon, they predicted the weather for February. In addition, if the day turned out to be cold, then the summer promised to be hot. If it was snowy and windy, the peasants expected a good harvest next year. But if the weather changed several times during the day, then during the winter one should wait for thaws.
