“We can go to a referendum with a complete agreement that will formalize the end of the war. Because people can choose: such an ending is suitable for us or not. And then a referendum. A referendum needs at least 60 days. And we need a real ceasefire for 60 days. Otherwise we will not hold it,” the president said.
He stressed that they will not go to the referendum under fire.
“I deeply understand how many millions of people there must be for a referendum to be legitimate. There are some people in the temporarily occupied territories, they cannot vote. And let’s be honest, they cannot choose how we end the war,” Zelensky said.
According to him, “if there is no security, legitimacy is in question.”
“We explain all this to our partners,” Zelensky said.
The head of state does not rule out that such a referendum could be held simultaneously with the elections, Interfax-Ukraine writes.
“Ukraine will submit this agreement for ratification by parliament in the format and/or hold an all-Ukrainian referendum for approval in the “yes” or “no” format. Ukraine may decide to hold elections simultaneously with the referendum,” Zelensky believes.
